We all hope!

The Israelis and the Palestinians are back again to talk peace. There is always a sense of optimism when they have met in the past. This time, it more pessimism. And there are good reasons.

The Palestinians are weak; they have nothing to bargain with; the leadership lacks support among its own people. Hamas is in  a non compromise mood. One really wonders who is the PLA representing. The only thing the Palestinians have is international public opinion. Israel does not give a rat’s behind about international public opinion.

The policy of the USA to Israel is not dictated by public opinion. If it was, there would have been peace a long time ago. US policy is dictated by the Jewish lobby.

During the Iraq War, we saw up to 200.000 thousand people demonsrating in Washinton; we saw the million man march.

In my life time, I have never seen a demonstration in the US for change in policy towards the Israelis. This explains why the US government continues to support in the face of Isreals viloations of international treaties and obligations.

More discomforting, only two countries in the muslim world actively work to help the Palestinians. They are Turkey and Iran. The rest are just poodles. They jump and back to the tune of the US.

Anyway, Obama is a different President in many ways. Lets see what happens this time.

The Mosque

Those who oppose the plan to build a mosque near Ground Zero are not able to distinguish between terrorists and muslims. Such people are bigots. Their opinions and prejuices are such that Islam and terrorist are bed fellow.

Many people are of the belief that someone terrorism is an Islamic preserve. This is not true. We are in world were religoius bias impose an interpreation of certain terms. A terrorist is a muslim; a freedowm fighter are Christians in Darfur or elsewhere.

We must be very careful not to prejuice a whole group of people based on their religion.

Building a mosque near Ground Zero will allow the Muslim people to offer prayers to the victims and family.

The politicans who say it is insensitive of Moslem to build a mosque there are bigots.

Selection of The President in Rwanda

What else can we call this. And already they (his supporters and people in the country) are worried about what would happen if he goes. Oh dear…..!

Next round; change the constitution and make him President for Life. Without him, the country would go back to 1994 when 800,000 people were murdered. Better with a oppressive, repressive society led by a dictator who does not tolerate criticism.

Need a any reminders? Uganda. Like Kagame, Museveni was a rebel leader; soldier turn politicians. And he (Musevini) has changed the constintuion to make him President for Life and in the process grooming his son. And like Kagame, “the people” are worried that he goes, the country would be torn apart.

In many of our African countries, corners are cut, compromises are made to the detriment of the people and long term development. How are we ever going to move forward?

Hmm

Love is a temple
Love a higher law
Love is a temple
Love the higher law
You ask me to enter
But then you make me crawl
And I can’t be holding on
To what you got
When all you got is hurt

Reflecting

The happiest moment in my life is when I am doing things with and for my children. When I am preparing food for them; when I am helping my son with his bath; when I am helping my daughter with her homework; when I am reading to my son in bed. It seems to me that a person cannot achieve a state of happiness until they are at the service of others. And I used the word state, for happiness is transient; it does not last but comes and go. Therefore to make it last, one needs to continually put the interest of others before oneself. At this moment, I am happy, as I am serving the needs of my children.

Murky Business

Two weeks before the 10 spies were arrested in the US, the CIA was already negotiating a prisoner swap! Murky business indeed!

Switching off your lights has a bigger impact than you might think, says new study

Switching off lights, turning the television off at the mains and using cooler washing cycles could have a much bigger impact on reducing carbon dioxide emissions from power stations than previously thought, according to a new study published this month in the journal Energy Policy. The study shows that the figure used by government advisors to estimate the amount of carbon dioxide saved by reducing people’s electricity consumption is up to 60 percent too low. Continue reading

Somalia at 50

Like Congo, the day before, this is another African tragedy. In fact on the day of the “celebrations”, there was heavy fighting in the capital Mogadishu. I don’t think I need to say more.

Somalia has become a byword for a failed State.

DR Congo at 50

50 years of “independence” and nothing to show for it! In my view the only good to have to come out of that country is its MUSIC! I love Congolese music.

Otherwise, they have many more years before they can truly celebrate!

African Football—

Its clear African football has failed in South Africa not because of the quality of play. Its a management issue. Max made the point about foreign coaches…I think it goes deeper. Every African country should commission an enquiry (with Latin American experts) on how we should run our FAs!

A case in point: Craig Bellamy went to Sierra Leone and open a football academy. The Sierra Leone FA was NEVER even consulted. Worse, he [Craig] never met the President of the FA.

Another case, the BBC is just reporting that the Nigerian organisation (management) for the World Cup has been disastrous! They could not get the chartered plane in time from London…leading to one day delay. Booked a hotel at altitude, when all their games were at Sea Level!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Incompetence does not begin to describe those in the management!
